Maize

Maize is now the world’s second most important cereal crop and is grown on more than 160 million hectares. Maize kernels have been used since ancient times in food for both humans and animals.

 

Maize is the seed of a plant native to Central America that is now widely cultivated throughout the world. Rich in starch, maize is an essential source of energy for animal husbandry. This is why it has become indispensable in the manufacture of animal feed.

 

World trade is estimated at 144 million tonnes. World stocks are forecast at 219 million tonnes and are represented by China, the US, Mexico and the EU.

Wheat

Wheat is the most cultivated plant in the world, covering more than 250 million hectares worldwide and is the most widely used in human food.

It is native to Southwest Asia and dates back about 9000 years. Grain has a high carbohydrate content and a high amount of starch and is very important in animal feed. Through wheat, farmers obtain the fastest weight gain and a superior taste of the meat.

The world trade is growing due to its fairly extensive use in making certain food products. Due to increased production, world wheat stocks have reached 263 million tonnes to date.

Barley

Barley is a grain native to Asia and is considered to be the plant with the greatest benefits for the body. It has its origins in the Himalayan Mountains and dates back to 7000 BC. In ancient times, green barley was referred to as the ‘bread of the poor’ because of its energizing and nutritious properties and the fact that it was easy to grow.

It is a gluten-free cereal and works as a natural fuel for the body, managing to double normal brain activity when consumed regularly. In animal feed it is quite valued, having also an important supply of high quality fibre.

World trade in barley is 14.7 million tonnes.

Sunflower

The sunflower is native to the Americas and is one of the most important oil plants grown on Earth. Oil extracted from sunflower seeds accounts for 13% of the world’s oil production. Peeled sunflower seeds have gained popularity among vegetarians and natural food enthusiasts since the 1970s.

According to worldwide reports, sunflowers are currently one of the most important oilseed crops, being used as feed for poultry, for oils and for the ever-growing snack food market.

Green peas

Peas are one of the oldest vegetables cultivated for their nutritional values.
Originated in North Africa, Mediterranean Europe and Central Asia the pea was first cultivated by the Greeks and Romans in southern Europe, from where it spread throughout the continent.

Is an excellent source of plant protein and contains a high amount of fibre. The pea crop is the most economical source of protein for animal feed. Peas have a higher energy value than wheat and are equivalent to corn, having a higher protein content.
